Crews begin removing boulevard trees affected by emerald ash borer in Decorah

Posted: Sun, Feb 5, 2017 11:59 AM

The City of Decorah has begun phase one of their plan to address the emerald ash borer infestation within the city limits.

Tens of Millions of Ash trees are mortally effected by this insect pest. Beetle larva will attack the upper portions of trees making first detection difficult to spot. External symptoms will begin to manifest, small jagged holes excavated by woodpeckers, lighter bark color where wood has been chipped away, and D shaped exit holes where adult beetles emerge from. This pest is very prolific and has proved difficult to control. Once infestation is detected there is NOT a solution for this pest, besides removal.  Trees can become brittle quickly and unsafe in public areas.

There are over 2,100 boulevard trees within the city of Decorah and ash trees comprise about 14% of the total. The City Forester has accessed and evaluated all of these trees and has implemented the City's plan to address the affected tress.

The tree removal will be completed in two phases. The first phase of notification and removal has already begun and will continue thru this Spring. Phase two is estimated to begin during Summer months.

The City of Decorah along with the Tree Board offer homeowners a partial reimbursement for purchasing and planting of new pest and disease resistant boulevard tree/trees, up to 2 per household/business.
