Presiding Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Rev. Elizabeth Eaton was awarded an Honorary Degree at Luther's Spring Convocation Thursday morning. Her Convocation address marked the start of the college's year-long commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation.
In her address, Bishop Eaton reflected on the church's ongoing call to reformation and service for the sake of the world. "The Lutheran movement was founded on the principle that all people are created equal, therefore we are called to serve one another and seek justice for the vulnerable. Martin Luther would say that faithful people engage in governing and serving by being involved in politics."
Rev. Eaton was elected as ELCA's fourth presiding bishop in 2013. She holds a bachelor of music education degree from the College of Wooster and a master of divinity degree from Harvard Divinity School. Rev. Eaton is the ELCA's first female presiding bishop.
