(Benji Nichols of Decorah, who is the chair of the Decorah Planning & Zoning Commission, has e-mailed this Letter to the Editor):
Five things I've learned from ten years on Planning & Zoning:
1) Very few people go to public meetings (until an issue is in their "back yard").
2) 90 percent of local policy is someone showing up to make it.
3) Leading a public meeting is a skill that everyone should understand.
4) Memory is short. The "long memory" of a City is only as good as the minutes and administrators that keep them.
5) Policy, codes, and plans are guideposts. They can be changed, but that takes real work, patience, and effort.
One of the most practical and impacting ways to hone your civic duty is to apply for an open position on a City Commission. There are currently openings on the Decorah Planning & Zoning, Human Rights, and Historic Preservation Commissions. The strength of these bodies resides in their diversity and mix of "everyday" Decorah citizens. You do not need to be an expert to offer your well-informed voice. Commissions are not politically driven and there is no focus on any political party affiliation – in fact, anyone within the city limits over the age of 18 can apply for a commission or board.
Consider serving your community today. The application process is easy and there are vacancies to be filled. Information and applications can be found at Decorah City Hall, with positions being appointed by the Mayor. Terms range from 3 to 5 years, with most meetings being held once a month.
For several years the Iowa State Code has called for gender balance on City commissions and boards – something that many small towns in Iowa have experienced challenges fulfilling. I strongly encourage anyone age 18 or older to apply for an open position. Give back while serving your community – consider applying today!
