Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum has announced its Folk Art School schedule of classes for 2017. Classes include painting and rosemaling, fiber arts, woodworking, knifemaking, blacksmithing, food traditions, jewelry making, Scandinavian music, and Norwegian language and culture.
New this year is "Norsk Skole," an Aftershool Program for ages 8-12 led by students in the Luther College Nordic Studies Program. Class will be held from 3:15-5:15 p.m. on Tuesday afternoons—Feb. 7, 14, 21, 28 and March 7, 14 and the cost is $30 per student. Each lesson will include basic Norwegian language instruction and typical activities of Norwegian folk art and outdoor traditions.
Also new this year are Scandinavian folk music workshops with Vidar Skrede, a freelance Nordic folk musician, who plays fiddle, Hardanger fiddle, and guitar. He will teach a beginning class on March 10-12 (Fri. 6:00-9:00, Sat. and Sun. 9:00-5:00) and an intermediate and advanced class on April 7-9 (Fri. 6:00-9:00, Sat. and Sun. 9:00-5:00).

Vesterheim offers a 50 percent discount for class tuition on a space-available, stand-by basis to any year-round resident of Winneshiek County. Stand-by students will be notified about availability of class openings one week before the starting date of the class.
