It's very likely that bike riders will pass through Winneshiek County in July as part of the annual RAGBRAI.
But there will be another event coming through Decorah one month earlier that also features a lengthy route and team of competitors.
Decorah will be one of eight stops on the 41st annual Air Race Classic, an all-women transcontinental airplane race. The course will begin in Frederick, Maryland on June 20th and will touch down in Indianapolis before stopping next in Decorah. Other stops are planned in Bemidji and Spencer along the way to a final touchdown in Sante Fe, New Mexico by June 24th.
The event traces its roots to the days of airplane barnstorming and to the 1929 Women's Air Derby. The race is open to any female pilot over the age of 17.
More information about the race will be available at a later date. At this point there is no official event planned at the Decorah Airport, since the planes involved will be landing and taking off at different times. However, that situation could change as the race date approaches.
