On Saturday at 10:00 a.m., local marchers will gather at Mary Christopher Park at the east end of Water Street to participate in a "sister march" in Decorah. The march is one of over 600 marches across the United States and other countries on Saturday in conjunction with The Women's March on Washington.
Local march organizer Shirley Vermace says, "A number of us in Decorah decided not to attend the march in DC, but still wanted to be a part of the national movement, so we decided to plan our march for the driftless region. The march is for anyone in the region who believes in basic human rights. It is a non-partisan, non-violent, peaceful march for and by women, and the men that support them. The purpose of the march is: for freedom, dignity, justice, unity, and solidarity For my daughter and other daughters, for the future, for hope, for love, for a better world, for the environment, and for healthcare."
There are similar marches scheduled on Saturday in all 50 states, with many states having multiple marches. Currently, well over 1 million people are registered for "sister marches" nation-wide. In Decorah, local march organizers say they hope to see over 100 people participate, but they'd be happy to see many more.
