It's official. Decorah meteorologist Richard Bernatz has announced, "The year of 2016 is the wettest calendar year on record."
Precipitation totaled 57.58 inches in Decorah during 2016. That's nearly 25 inches more precipitation than falls during an average year. The 2016 precipitation total beats the figure from the runner-up year--1993--by 8.47 inches.
It usually poured when it did rain in 2016. There were 122 days with measurable precipitation, resulting in an average of 0.47 inches of precipitation per day it rained or snowed. That nearly doubled 1993's average.
Five months during 2016 were in the top ten rankings for their respective month: September was 1st, August was 2nd, March and July were both 4th and December was 9th.
The driest year on record was 1910, when just 18.51 inches of precipitation was recorded. That means the 2016 total in more than three times the 1910 total.
