A prayer service was held Thursday evening at First Lutheran Church in Decorah to honor the memory of Luther College professor emeritus Weston Noble, who died earlier this month at the age of 94.
Luther College President Paula Carlson read a Bible verse at the service, saying "The opening verses of John are a core Gospel reading for the season of Christmas. With Weston's death coming on the Winter Solstice, the darkest day of the year, we were all reminded of the Gospel light that shines so brightly in Weston's life."
Reverend Mike Blair told the gathering, "A common theme in stories about encounters with Weston involves brief, but pivotal conversations. He was such a keen listener and student of the human story, especially the story of a person's calling. Weston one day asked one student about his plans after Luther. The student told him he was a biology major with plans for biomedical engineering. He never told Weston he was wondering about this and wrestling with a yearning to change his course. Weston just listened, looked at him and kindly said, "No, that's not it," and went on his way. This nudge encouraged the student to chart a new path that led to seminary and a career in pastoral ministry."
Rev. Blair concluded by saying, "For the remarkable and generous life of Weston Noble, for the light of Christ that shines so brightly in and through him, we say To God Alone be the Glory, Soli Deo Gloria."
