Luther College icon Weston Noble has died. Noble passed away Wednesday from complications from a fall.
He will be remembered as a towering giant at Luther College. Born in 1922 in Riceville, he began piano lessons at the age of 5. He enrolled in college at Luther at a time when the school did not offer a music major.
One day In his junior year his choir conductor had to be gone--so Weston Noble volunteered to conduct the choir rehearsal. He later said that he knew then that God meant for him to be a music conductor.
But first came the U.S. Army and World War II. He saw action in the Battle of the Bulge as a tank division soldier.
When the war ended, he earned a Masters in Music degree from the University of Michigan. He was hired to conduct the Luther College Concert Band as its "interim" director in 1948--and stayed at the school for the next 57 years.
Noble didn't just confine his talents to the music department. He was an avid booster of Luther College and often called prospective students to talk with them about the school and to urge them to enroll.
Funeral details for Noble have not yet been announced.
