The cold weather Monday didn't stop 15 Decorah area residents from marching in opposition to the Electoral College.
The group met at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the 48-hour parking lot across from City Hall in Decorah and marched to the Winneshiek County Courthouse.
The march is in support of ending the Electoral College as a way to select Presidents. The 538 members of the Electoral College, who are chosen by state political parties, are meeting Monday to cast their ballots for President.
Organizer Steve McCargar says the Electoral College is a carry over from the days when slave-owning Southern states had to be given extra influence in order to sign onto the Constitution. He calls the Electoral College "a vestigial tail of our slave-owning roots and the reason that Donald Trump will become our next president in January (despite receiving 2.8 million fewer votes than Hillary Clinton)."
