Decorah resident Steven Nelson hopes to help those in need again this year through his "Scarves in the Park" project at Water Street Park next to the Co-Op in downtown Decorah.
Last year Nelson launched his project in Decorah after learning about the idea on social media. "I saw a Facebook posting about scarves hanging in trees for anyone who needed them and I just knew it would work in our community here in Northeast Iowa," said Nelson.
The basic idea of the project is "NEED a scarf, TAKE a scarf. HAVE a scarf, LEAVE a scarf." People are invited to add mittens, gloves and hats to the trees as well.
The project has been very well received and Nelson says he is thankful for everyone who has supported him in this endeavor, including Decorah Park and Rec, Blue Heron Knittery, Norse Knitters, Art Haus, prayer shawl groups, and many local individuals.
In 2015, Nelson's project shared over 180 items. Items that were left over were boxed up and donated to local agencies. Since then, Nelson has been busy preparing for the second year of his project. He has knit and sold over two dozen items and used the money to purchase supplies and items to be donated this year. He has also spent time shopping at the Depot to purchase items to donate. Nelson even takes time to launder and repair items that need a little extra TLC before he hangs them up in the trees at Water Street Park.
In the case of wet weather, the items are taken down and replaced when the weather clears. Nelson says, "Any items left after the completion of the project will be donated to local organizations that can find a much needed home for them."
