The number of absentee or early ballots cast in Winneshiek County for the 2016 election has set a record.
As of 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, 6,428 people had either voted by an absentee ballot sent out by mail or voted early in person at the Winneshiek County Auditor's Office. For historical reference, there were a total of 5,884 absentee ballots cast in 2012.
Of the voters casting absentee ballots, 2,479 identified themselves as Democrats, 2,163 identified themselves as Republicans, while 1,976 had no party affiliation.
A total of 6,618 absentee ballots were requested, which means 200 ballots that have been mailed out have not yet returned. Those absentee ballots need to be postmarked by Monday or can be hand delivered to the Auditors office no later than 9:00pm on Tuesday.
Voters can cast ballots at their regular polling locations on Tuesday November 8th from 7:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m.
New voters and address changes will require additional documentation which may include identification and proof of residency. Contact the Auditor's office with questions.
