How can you tell if a sound is too loud for you and could lead to hearing loss?

Mayo Clinic Health System ear, nose and throat specialist Dr. William Remington and Mayo Clinic Health System audiologist Cynthia See, both of whom work in Decorah, say you should avoid noises that make you have to shout to be heard, that are painful to your ears or that make your ears ring during and after exposure.

If you have decreased or "muffled" hearing for several hours after exposure, that is a sign of temporary and possibly permanent hearing damage.

The two say you may not need a doctor's referral to make an appointment. Audiology services are covered by most insurance companies, but check with your insurance provider for details.
