John Cline and North Winneshiek properties don't rank that high as potential elementary sites on the Decorah School Board's "matrix"

On Monday night the Decorah School Board evaluated the John Cline and North Winneshiek properties on the same matrix they used on five other properties when they met last week.  Last week they met in closed session because of numerous confidentiality issues related to those private properties.

The "matrix" had a potential of 100 points, with John Cline attaining 79, and North Winneshiek 65.  Although the Board did not proceed with a further plan for next steps because of procedural issues – that was not included on the posted agenda – it was apparent that neither property was at the top level of points allocated to other sites. The school board is expected to discuss the next steps at their next meeting and that will likely include a small committee to discuss availability and logistics of the top-rated site, or sites, with the property owners.

The school board expressed concerns that limited matrix points for both sites, including location and the perceived lack of public acceptance of either site. John Cline was ranked very low in terms of property size and shape, even considering that construction on that site would include a multi-floor facility.

Board members expressed high appreciation for the matrix that was used, noting that it was very helpful in discussing multiple issues, and that it would be helpful in future public discussions. They also noted that the point total for properties could significantly change at any time if factors such as availability or capital cost would change.
