(Winneshiek County Sheriff Dan Marx has submitted the following Letter to the Editor):
I would like to express my deepest appreciation to all citizens of Winneshiek County for your support the past year and a half. Since I took office and became your sheriff in April 2015, we have worked together to bring transparency, accessibility and innovation to the Winneshiek County Sheriff's Office. I have had the privilege of serving with a great staff to carry out this mission.
We have implemented:
• Social media and regular news releases to keep you up-to-date on how your tax dollars are being spent
• Mental health reform at a local level in partnership with other concerned leaders and agencies
• Medical Response Unit to increase our abilities to assist in emergency medical situations
• Business Notification Program to alert businesses of potential scams and fraud
• "Run, Hide, Fight" violent intruder training to prepare our schools and organizations for the unthinkable
• Education opportunities for inmates while they are in the Winneshiek County Jail through a partnership with NICC
• Four–wheel drive/all-wheel drive vehicles for all deputies to improve our ability to respond to emergencies in all conditions and terrain
• Technology upgrades and more
My most gratifying work has been to connect with the people of Winneshiek County and offer you a fresh perspective on how local law enforcement can meet your needs.
We are fortunate to live in the greatest county on earth where patriotism and a sense of calling thrive. As we approach the upcoming election, I encourage each and every citizen to exercise your right to vote.
I look forward to continuing to serve you over the next four years.
