President Obama has approved a Presidential Disaster Declaration for Winneshiek County and seven other counties impacted by severe storms in August.

The counties included in the declaration are: Allamakee, Chickasaw, Clayton, Fayette, Floyd, Howard, Mitchell, and Winneshiek.  In order to request a Presidential Disaster Declaration, damage incurred must meet criteria set by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The declaration by the President will provide federal funding to the declared counties.  Winneshiek County officials submitted $2.2 million in damage estimates to the state and federal governments.

The Presidential Disaster Declaration also includes funding to conduct hazard mitigation activities for Winneshiek County and the rest of Iowa.

Also Friday, Iowa Governor Terry Branstad has declared a disaster emergency for Fayette County for flooding that began Wednesday, September 21st.  That means a total of 23 counties have now been proclaimed state disaster areas.
