Walking School Bus program seeks volunteers

Posted: Thu, Sep 15, 2016 5:18 PM

The Walking School Bus is a group of students (passengers) who walk to and/or from school with one or more responsible supervisors, such as a parent or volunteer neighbor (the driver).  Some meet every day, while others meet once or twice a week.

Studies show physical activity helps improve academic performance and health in children. Walking and biking to and from school are easy, FREE ways to get children active, which is essential for healthy growth and development.

Volunteers are wanted for several of the Walking School Bus routes—the morning route from the Flats, the morning route from Mechanic Street and the afternoon route to the West Side.  Four routes have space available for additional students—the morning route from East Main Street, the morning route from West Side to John Cline, the morning route from Dug Road to John Cline and the afternoon route from St. Benedict School to Carrie Lee.  The Freeport Biking School Bus (Friday mornings/afternoons) is also looking for students and volunteers. Please contact April Bril at (563) 382-6171 or abril@uerpc.org for more information.
