The Decorah Community School Board will convene at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 5th, to discuss options regarding new elementary school facilities. This comes in the aftermath of the Decorah City Council rejecting a request by the school district to be allowed to purchase city-owned property on Claiborne Drive.
The meeting will convene as an open session, but will take the form of multiple "closed door" sessions to discuss each potential individual property. Superintendent Mike Haluska had consulted legal advice after last month's meeting regarding the mechanics of closed meetings. The concern had been expressed that public discussion could impede potential negotiations, as well as be unfair to property owners who might not want public discussion of their properties.
The school board is expected to discuss properties in the context of a "matrix" that helps define the educational and logistical priorities for sites as related to location. StruXture Architects will be working with the district on the matrix as well as the designs.
