When Mr. Answer Person was asked about the cave on the west side of Locust Road, heading north out of Decorah (http://www.decorahnews.com/news-stories/2016/09/14493.html), he noted the theory that it was built as a storage spot for dynamite during a road building project and the theory that it was used to store beer and liquor for a tavern located nearby.
Now our readers have weighed in, starting with Ed: "The cave on Locust Road is obviously a Troll structure, created to attract unsuspecting Christian men into its dark interior. Once inside they are dragged into the Troll's caves which honeycomb the bluffs from Ridge Road all the way to Holland's Farm. If one had the nerve to enter the cave, they would almost certainly find an opening at the back of the structure, where Trolls enter and exit. This is the portal through which Christians would enter a life of slavery in the Trolls caves. It might be hard to find this opening as its builders would have almost certainly concealed it with a veneer of crumbling limestone."
Yes, well, we'll get back to you on that, Ed. Gerald was more helpful, confirming that his father always told him the cave had been built to store dynamite when a previous roadbed for Locust Road was blasted out of the cliffs.
But it's Deanne who gets the honor of discussing the two stories proposed about the cave--and saying they are both correct: "The cave on Locust Road WAS originally used to store dynamite when the Locust Road was being built. My grandfather was one of the workers on the road when it was being built, and, due to the heat that summer, they had to keep the dynamite out of the heat and humidity and used the cave to store the dynamite. As the story continues, after that use, it was used for beer and liquor storage."
Thanks to everyone for their help in making Mr. Answer Person a little bit smarter!
