The City of Decorah this fall and winter will help to match willing hunters and willing landowners in an attempt to reduce the size of the deer population within the city limits.
For this first year of the "deer depridation" program in Decorah, the hunt will be administered by the city and not by the DNR. Under operation by the city, the deer hunters would be required to follow all state DNR hunting rules, but not the stricter rules of a DNR-managed deer management zone.
Council member Kirk Johnson said having the city do its own hunt would "allow us to dip our toe in it."
Several of the details of the hunt still remain to be decided, including which public parks might be included and what dates the deer hunt will take place.
