Not only did the massive rainstorm that struck Winneshiek County on Wednesday do a lot of immediate damage, it also soaked the ground underneath a lot of structures.
That led to the collapse of part of the Dug Road Trail in Decorah, for instance. The repair of the trail is expected to take awhile and the Loop de Loop half marathon the end of September will have to find a different course. However, organizers of the event say the Loop de Loop race will still go on--alternate race routes are currently being developed and will be posted on the Decorah Rotary website, www.decorahrotary.org, in the near future.
The heavy rain also activated springs that had been dormant for quite awhile. Now that the ground has been weakened, it's possible another heavy storm could do a second round of damage.
