The board of directors of Girl Scouts of Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois Thursday evening voted unanimously to sell Camp Tahigwa in Dorchester. The vote included the stipulation that the land be permanently maintained as a natural space for public use.
Following the vote, the Girl Scouts board assigned a task force to send an exploratory letter to county conservation groups as well as the Department of Natural Resources and the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation. Winneshiek County Conservation will be among the agencies contacted.
"GSEIWI remains committed to providing programs and outdoor education that are relevant and fiscally sustainable for our girls," said Girl Scouts of Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois CEO Diane Nelson. "We utilize parks and naturalized areas throughout the council to offer the best outdoor programs to girls and that will certainly continue."
GSEIWI recently raised more than $4 million to renovate Camp Liberty in New Liberty, Iowa. This summer the camp had more than 1,400 girls attend--almost double last year's numbers.
Thursday evening the Girl Scouts board also voted to sell 22.2 acres of unused property at Camp L-Kee-Ta in Danville, Iowa.
