(Downtown Decorah leaders met last week to discuss a variety of issues involving Decorah's business district. All this week decorahnews.com's Paul Scott will summarize some of the issues raised):
There are 560 acres of land in Decorah's parks system. But the next new park might be less than 1/1,000th of that total. "Tiny parks" or "Mini parks" are a new trend across the country, turning parking lots and parking spaces into park land that can be used by city dwellers.
The trend is not just for big cities, with Ames, Iowa and Mankato, MInnesota among the communities recently building tiny parks.
Downtown Decorah leaders think our community has one place that will work for a tiny park--the parking space on Winnebago Street that now holds a bike rack. When combined with the sidewalk bump-out next to it, the single parking space could house tables where people could eat lunch and another bench or two for visitors to use to take a break.
Tiny parks aren't impressive in size, but they have attracted a lot of supporters. Should a "tiny park" be built on the north end of Winnebago Street? Send your comments to news@decorahnews.com
