In response to the storm that swept through Decorah on Thursday evening, the Decorah yard-waste site will be open for residents' use on Friday and at least through Monday.
City street superintendent Kevin Nelson says the site will remain open with some regular staffing on Saturday morning but that the gates will be unlocked Friday through Monday for residents to haul their storm damage debris. He also noted that only yard-waste is collected at the site. Building materials and other debris needs to be hauled to the landfill or collected by a commercial solid waste company.
Residents are ask to please pile tree brush, limbs and debris on the boulevard in front of their residences. City crews will be along to remove debris that impacts safety and traffic control first. On Monday they will begin to chip limbs and branches as necessary.
Please do not pile debris in the street.
Be patient, as it may take some time for crews to reach you and your property.
Winneshiek County Emergency Management Coordinator Sean Snyder has arranged for the Salvation Army to be on site at the municipal building to provide meals, water and coffee for those needing such help. Anyone is welcome to come down between noon and 5:00 p.m. and get something to eat or refreshments. Remember to be safe and drink plenty of fluids if outside working.
