Letter to the Editor #5: Nordic Fest parade crasher

Posted: Thu, Aug 4, 2016 10:35 AM

(The following Letter to the Editor was sent to decorahnews.com by Travis Koenig of Postville BEFORE the 4:00 p.m. Wednesday cutoff of letters about the Nordic Fest Parade anti-Clinton float):

"FREEDOM OF SPEECH has been one of this country's core values since its inception.  Sure, we may not like what some people have to say, but it is their God-given right to say it.  Are we in a place were everything has to be politically correct?

I personally like John Deere tractors. Am I going to throw a hissy fit if there are other tractors in the parade?  "Hell, no," but I guess if someone exercises their right to free speech and says something that some don't agree with, then I guess it's OK to act like a bunch of school kids and throw a fit because we didn't like what was said.

It seems to me that a lot of focus is being put on the Nordic Fest board for not "intervening" and not "seeing" the float in time.  I don't know how many floats were in the parade but I am sure it was a very large turnout and I am sure tough to see everything that was going on.  I believe that the parade chairperson has stepped down now, so there is plenty of room for the people that I guess nothing gets by to step in and fill that position, and I hope that they keep any and all things that might be upsetting or controversial out of the parade from here on.

I do wonder how the reaction would have been if there was a not so nice comment made about Trump on a float.  Would the primarily Democratic population of Decorah be rejoicing in the streets?  By watching the news clip on the link to this story if 63,000 people liked what they seen and if he was getting standing ovations from the crowd then does that mean that the people of Stewartville don't know what is PC and the people of Decorah do?

Not to delve too deeply into politics but is there any chance that there may be some merit to this float? I guess only time and God will know.
