Did you have a "Pork Chop on a Stick" at either the Winneshiek County Fair or Nordic Fest?  If you did, you not only enjoyed a juicy treat, you also helped to raise money for anti-hunger projects worldwide.

That's because proceeds from the sales went to the Winneshiek County Community of Hope Food Resource Bank chapter.  The organization raises funds through donations of crops, donations of livestock and the sale of pork chops at the Fair and Fest.

Community of Hope has announced it raised $21,000 from the sale of pork chops this year.  Half of the money--$10,500--will be split between Winneshiek County's three food banks.  The other $10,500 will be used to purchase tools for third-world agricultural projects in Columbia and Guatemala.  In ten years the organization has donated over $250,000 to projects in Honduras, Mozambique, Palestine, East Zambia, Guatemala, Bosnia, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Uganda, Peru and Colombia.

The funds raised are turned into equipment, seed, fertilizer, building materials and other supplies--the organization never sends money to the projects as there is the danger it will never get there due to that particular country's government.  The program provides simple tools so farmers can grow crops to feed themselves and their families.
