Is the City of Decorah willing to sell its property on Claiborne Drive that currently is used for a softball diamond, so the Decorah School District can build a new elementary school on the site?
The Decorah School Board and Decorah City Council will meet Monday night at 6:30 at City Hall to discuss that question. School district officials are hoping to get a definitive answer from the city council on the availability of the site.
The discussion comes because the Decorah School District and North Winneshiek School District are scheduled to merge in the fall of 2019, meaning space would be needed to handle the additional students. The current North Winneshiek facilities could be used on a short term basis, but it does not appear that the Decorah School Board would consider the North Winneshiek facilities as part of a long term plan for the district.
Decorah School District officials say they need a definitive answer from the Decorah City Council on the Claiborne Drive property so that the school district can begin exploring other options if the city doesn't want to sell the Claiborne Drive property.
