Decorah native Paul Sullivan has been named a 2016 Peace Scholar.
The Peace Scholars program is an outgrowth of the Nobel Peace Prize Forum, an annual event held in Minneapolis that is sponsored by six colleges founded by Norwegian-American immigrants--Augsburg, Augustana (Sioux Falls), Concordia (Moorhead), Luther, Pacific Lutheran, and St. Olaf. Two students from each college are selected as Peace Scholars and awarded a seven-week academic experience held in Lillehammer and Oslo, Norway.
Sullivan will be a senior at St. Olaf College this fall, with a major in Asian Studies and a concentration in China Studies. He is especially interested in the application of Peace Studies to the field of International Relations and to America's and China's relationships with East Asia and the rest of the world. Sullivan has been active with the St. Olaf Interfaith Coalition for Peace and Justice, of which he is a founding member and currently serves as social media officer.
Two Luther College students—Nathan Campbell and Betsy Fawcett--also were named 2016 Peace Scholars.
Campbell will be a junior at Luther this fall. He is a chemistry major with a minor in the German Language. He is interested in the ways in which conflict and capitalism are connected.
Fawcett will be a senior at Luther this fall. She is studying political science and psychology. She supplements her majors with courses in economics, statistics, and religion. She is the president of Luther College Democrats and works closely with the Winneshiek County Democrats, coaches the Decorah Middle School mock trial team and volunteers as a Court Appointed Special Advocate for children involved in juvenile court cases.
