It's a minor question, but it's one detail City of Decorah officials want to be absolutely sure has an answer.
At a Thursday morning meeting of the city's Finance Committee, the topic of the height of the Indianola aerial ladder fire truck was discussed. The fire truck, which Decorah is considering buying for around $900,000, is 11 feet 8 inches at its tallest. The doors on the Decorah fire station are 12 feet 4 inches tall.
That would seem to indicate the fire truck would fit inside the doors, but Decorah Fire Chief Mike Ashbacher says the concrete driveways leading into the fire station have settled slightly and might cause a fire engine to enter the station at a slight angle.
Ashbacher says an adjustment can be made to the fire station doors for around $1,500 to give two or three additional inches of clearance.
City officials say there's only one way to tell if the fire engine will fit--bring it to Decorah. They will contact Indianola officials again and ask if the truck can be brought to Decorah later this month.
