NASCAR driver Martin Truex Jr. won the Coca Cola 600 in Charlotte over the weekend--and did it with his car decorated in memory of a fallen soldier from Ossian, Iowa.
Marine Gunnery Sergeant Jeffrey E. Bohr Jr. died April 10th, 2003 in northern Baghdad in a seven-hour gun battle in front of a mosque, engaging enemy forces.
As an Army Ranger and then a Marine, Bohr parachuted into Grenada, helped oust Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega, served in the Gulf War and trained for urban combat by rappelling out of helicopters and learning to float with his hands and feet tied.
On Monday Truex wheeled his No. 78 race care into Victory Lane, then he told reporters afterward, "This is a special weekend. It's really neat to bring that name (of fallen hero Gunnery Sergeant Jeffrey E. Bohr Jr.) home to Victory Lane. Just a lot of emotion right now. Not really sure it's sunk in yet. Just an amazing day, an amazing weekend for all of us. It's a weekend you dream about."
