Study: Trout Run Trail's economic impact is $1.6--$2.4 million/year

Four University of Iowa graduate school students have completed their study of the economic impact of Decorah's Trout Run Trail.

John Bruce, Ryan Dusil, Grant Shirts and Matt Van Hoeck used data collected in a survey of trail users last October.  The four say they were particularly interested in the responses of people who said they came from outside Winneshiek County specifically to use the Trout Run Trail.

The students analyzed the spending those visitors could reasonably have been projected to make at area restaurants, hotels and shops.  Using a multiplier effect ratio, they placed the total economic impact of the trail at between $1.6 million to $2.4 million per year.

The study results will be used by local officials in applying for grants and in marketing to bike trail tourists.
