Two Luther College students have received a $10,000 Davis Projects for Peace grant to help a school in rural Afghanistan.
Ali Yazdani and Mustafa Muhammadi will use the money and other donations to help Paymori High School, which is located in Bamyan, Afghanistan, three hours west of Kabul. The school has eight classrooms and over 400 students, of which 150 are girls. There is a morning shift and an afternoon shift at the school. One of the ways the grant will be spent is on buying table and bench units which will keep younger students off the cold cement floors and make them less likely to become ill.
The two Luther students say their project "will cause significant encouragement for students and families to send their children to school." Yazdani and Muhammadi say improved education will lead to a better future and will help move the community towards a sustainable peace.
Yazdani and Muhammadi plan to visit the school this summer and start bringing supplies.
Anyone interested in contributing to the project can send a check payable to Luther College to Jon Lund, Center for Global Learning, Luther College.
