Volunteers are working on the Porter House's gardens

The Porter House was built in 1867, which means that not only does the building require regular maintenance, but so do the gardens.

This week volunteers from Americorps have joined museum volunteers in working on the gardens to the west of the museum.

Concrete trim at the edge of the gardens had gotten covered with dirt, so the volunteers are digging out the concrete, putting bricks underneath, putting the concrete back into place and then putting the dirt back.

Volunteers also will be replanting some of the bushes and plants that had been in the garden.

This June, Porter House will host a Garden Party for its supporters--and will be able to show off the new look outside.
