This is National Library Week, a time to highlight the changing roles of libraries, librarians and library workers.
Decorah Library Director Lorraine Borowski says the Decorah Library has become "an all-encompassing resource center." While the library checked out books 134,355 times during its last fiscal year, its nearly 19,000 patrons also use the library as a technology center, bringing in laptops and school iPads to take advantage of the library's technology.
Borowski says technology is an important part of the library, but it's changing. More and more on-line services offered through the library do not require a large investment in servers or other equipment, being web-based instead.
Another important program of the Decorah Library are the partnerships it has with other organizations. For instance, the RSVP program is headquartered in the library, allowing it to coordinate senior volunteer programs throughout the area. Likewise, the Toys Go Round and Decorah Genealogy programs have office space at the library.
The Decorah Public LIbrary is celebrating National Library week with fine anmensty all week. Anyone with an overdue library material can bring it to the front desk of the library, let a staff member know the material is overdue and all fines will be removed.
