School district can vary in the procedures they use when a threat exists, either directly to the school or in the nearby community. But some similarities exist:
- All school activities are moved indoors
- Exterior doors and sometimes interior doors are locked
- No one is allowed to enter the school building, or access is sharply reduced.
- Depending upon the severity of the situation, school districts will issue text messages and e-mails informing parents and other people about the situation.
