Bridge over The Cut narrowly escapes being closed

Posted: Tue, Apr 5, 2016 11:00 AM

The bridge on Oneota Drive over The Cut has just barely escaped getting closed down.

State inspectors gave the bridge a "deficiency rating" earlier this year, but city officials got the inspectors to allow the bridge to remain open if temporary fixes were made.

Now, however, the city must plan for a new bridge.  The Decorah City Council will be asked at a future meeting to approve an engineering design contract for a replacement bridge.

City Administrator Chad Bird says the project will be eligible for state funding, which the city must apply for.

In the meantime, traffic is still being allowed over the bridge.
