The Pulpit Rock Campground will use a slightly different registration system this year. Campground Manager Doug Schroeder describes it as a "baby step" being taken as a way to test the reaction to a different reservation system.
Last year campers were surveyed about whether they would support changes in the previous registration system, which did not allow for advanced registrations and required people to bring their campers to the campground before they could make a reservation for staying overnight.
This season people will be able to call the Pulpit Rock Campground after 8:00 in the morning to make a reservation over the phone for a camping spot for that day. Schroeder says local campers also won't have to run down with their campers at 8:00 a.m.—they can just call to find out of spots are open that evening.
There has been discussion of going to on-line reservations for camping spots, but Schroeder says the reaction to that proposal from existing campers was mixed. Also, he notes Internet service to the campground might not be adequate, since the campground is not yet hooked up to Metronet's fast fiber.
The campground opened for the season over the weekend. Schroeder says the new system will be used all this year—to test the response from campers. "We're trying to respond (to the public's wishes)," he says.
