A sober St. Patrick's Day?

Posted: Wed, Mar 16, 2016 12:36 PM

St. Patrick's Day has been one of the nation's deadliest holidays--but that might be changing.

Figures provided by the Decorah Police Department show there were 32 people killed on St. Patrick's Day crashes involving alcohol in 2013.  That figure dropped to 18 in 2014.

"We are greatly encouraged by the downward trend in drunk-driving fatalities," says Decorah Police officer Dave Smutzler.  But he is encouraging people who plan to celebrate St. Patrick's Day by making sure they have a designated driver who stays sober.

Smutzler says every though drunk driving fatalities declined in 2014, there were 9,967 drunk-driving fatalities that year.  "Too many people are not getting the message," he says.
