This Thursday morning at 9:30, Luther College President Paula Carlson will open the door to her office to see who has come to talk with her.
It will be the latest in a series of "Open Office Hours" the new Luther president has instituted—times when anyone can come to talk with her—professors, staff members, students and anyone else who wishes to discuss a topic involving the college.
Carlson says she got the idea from her time at St. Mary's College in Notre Dame, Indiana. At that time Notre Dame University president Father Ted Hesburgh maintained an open door policy. He prided himself that if a student had a problem, he or she was welcome to drop in and discuss it with him.
At Luther, Carlson says her open office hours have resulted in a variety of visitors, discussing a variety of topics. No appointment is necessary—anyone can come to her office during "Open Office Hours" and talk with the Luther president.
