Jurors in the Alex Fazzino murder trial on Friday morning got a chance to listen to a deposition from Emily Fazzino's father, Richard Beckwith. Beckwith could not appear in court, so the deposition was read aloud, with Decorah attorney Barrett Gipp taking the part of Beckwith.
In the deposition, Beckwith said his son-in-law had expressed concerns about Emily taking too many prescription pills "more than once."
But Beckwith also testified Emily went through a detox session at his house late in 2011 and "was absolutely happy" afterwards. "She was happy because she was out from (drug addiction)," he stated.
His statement also said he received a phone call from his daughter on January 29th, 2012--the date of her death--and she "sounded scared." She called her while he was on a business trip--which wasn't normal for her--and asked him whether she should take the children over to her parents' house. He said Emily was worried that since she had filed papers for a divorce there would be a fight for custody of the children. Said Beckwith in his deposition, "Ironically, I haven't seem the kids since Emily's death."
