How many people took part in Monday night's Iowa Democratic Party Caucuses? That's such a simple question, you'd think there would be a simple answer. But the numbers have been changing since Monday night.
Democratic Party officials on Monday night said turnout was "massive" and rivaled 2008, when the Barack Obama vs. Hillary Clinton vs. John Edwards contest brought out 239,000 people to the Democratic caucuses.
On Tuesday, however, Iowa Democratic Party Chair Dr. Andy Mc Guire said that 171,109 Iowans had participated in this year's Democratic Party caucuses--a large total, but 68,000 fewer than 2008's record.
In Winneshiek County, Democratic Party Chair Matt Tapscott says 1,685 people voted in local caucuses at 11 locations. Based on that voting, Bernie Sanders received 70 delegates and Hillary Clinton received 55 delegates.
Some other news organizations have been reporting Winneshiek County results in terms of vote totals, not delegates, and saying there were 1,100 votes cast. Iowa Democratic Party officials say those news organizations took the total number of State Delegate Equivalents won by each candidate and multiplied them by 100 to obtain INCORRECT vote totals. The Iowa Democratic Party is working with those news organization to correct the figures.
