Sheriff's Department is warning of a phone scam

The Winneshiek County Sheriff's Department says it has received several complaints from residents about phone calls from a person who claims they are with the Microsoft Support Group.  The caller will state that they have been monitoring computers online and have deactivated your personal computer because of an ongoing virus or malware issue.

The Sheriff's Department says no one from Microsoft Support will call you and request remote access to your personal computer.  Microsoft has not been monitoring your computer online.  This is a scam to gain access to your computer, personal information, bank accounts, and passwords.  

Deputies are reminding the public to never give anyone access to your computer unless you have called for technical support.
