How many candidates for President will visit Decorah in the next month?

Posted: Wed, Jan 6, 2016 3:44 PM

The Iowa Caucuses are less than one month away--scheduled for Monday, February 1st.

Decorah has already been visited by Republican Presidential candidates Dr. Ben Carson, Mike Huckabee (twice), Bobby Jindahl and Rick Santorum and by Democratic Presidential candidates HIllary Clinton and Martin O'Malley.

This got us to thinking--"How likely is it that other candidates will visit Decorah before February 1st?"  Here are our best guesses:

--Jeb Bush: It seems unlikely that establishment Republicans' choice Jeb Bush will visit Decorah--but not impossible.  Bush needs a good showing in either Iowa or New Hampshire to breathe life back into his campaign--although our guess is that he'd much rather take his chances with voters in New Hampshire.

--Ben Carson: Has been to Decorah already and probably won't return.

--Chris Christie: Is staking his chances on doing well in New Hampshire, so he probably won't come to Decorah

--Ted Cruz: Will visit Decorah Friday evening as part of a NE Iowa campaign swing.

--Carly Fiorina: Needs something to reinvigorate her campaign.  Could Iowa give her that boost?  It seems 50/50 that she'll visit Decorah.

--Jim Gilmore: No frickin' way!

--Mike Huckabee: Has been here twice--more than any other candidate

--John Kasich: Could be a possibility, although his campaign also might find New Hampshire more attractive.

--Rand Paul: Hasn't spent a lot of time campaigning anywhere in Iowa.  Probably won't come here.

--Marco Rubio: Running third in the Iowa polls, but hasn't done a lot of campaign stops here. 40/60 that he'll visit Decorah

--Rick Santorum: Has already visited once.  Could return.

--Donald Trump:  Not gonna happen!

--Hillary Clinton: Has visited once--probably won't revisit.

--Martin O'Malley: Like Santorum, he has already visited once and could return.

--Bernie Sanders: The most intriguing possibility.  Has a campaign office here and Decorah is somewhat of a Bernie Sanders town.  I'm going to say it's 2-to-1 in favor of a Sanders visit.

How accurate will our predictions be?  Stay tuned during the next month.
