The Winneshiek County Sheriff's Department, after consulting with the business that caters meals to jail inmates, has decided to make some changes.
Prisoners are now being served one hot meal and one cold meal between lunch and dinner. The change has happened in order that the caterer would not have to pay the labor costs of taking meals to the jail twice a day.
Jail officials stress that the cold lunch or dinner is a complete meal and not just a sandwich, but it is one that can be delivered at the same time the hot meal is delivered.
Jail populations have been down somewhat during the past year, so the Sheriff's Department appreciates that its caterer still will provide meal service to jail inmates.
