Waterloo woman who had donated money for a new Winneshiek County K-9 officer has died of cancer

89-year-old Betty McCoy of Waterloo has died from cancer.  McCoy was well-known in the Waterloo area, where she contributed to a number of charities.

But in November of last year, McCoy donated to the Winneshiek County Sheriff's Department--even though she had no ties to the county.  Betty had learned that the Sheriff's Department's K-9 officer, Ricky, had gone into hospice care and the department would soon need a new dog, but was wondering how to raise the funds to buy one.  Mc Coy's daughter contacted Winneshiek County Sheriff Dan Marx and told him her mother would pay the costs.

On Sunday morning McCoy died just two months before she would have turned 90.  Her funeral services are pending with the Locke Funeral Home in Waterloo.  The Winneshiek County Sheriff's Department will be sending a delegation of representatives to the funeral.
