The South Winneshiek FFA chapter in Calmar has received two "Living to Serve" environmental grants from the National FFA, totaling $4,500.
The first grant, a $2,500 award, will be used to provide educational experiences and field days at the South Winneshiek FFA Test plot. Funds will be used for educational field days, test plot signs, advertisement and fertilizer.
The second grant, a $2,000 award, will be used to fund a year-long program aimed at preparing students to act in the event of floods or power outages. Students will learn about motors and generators and their wiring systems. Students will also learn how to use transit levels to measure elevation and determine low points in the school district which may need to be sandbagged in the event of a flood.
