Although many of the neighbors around Carrie Lee School have seen the noise problem from boilers, air handling systems and air conditioning improved after remediation efforts by the District, one neighbor, Steve Runde, says the problem still exists and is seriously disruptive to his sleep. Runde feels most of the problem is related to the boilers, and that the disruption is influenced by the height of his house, which is considerably higher than other neighbors.
The Decorah Community School Board spent about 45 minutes on the issue Monday night. They cited consultant work that found decibel noise levels were within the acceptable range for urban neighborhoods. Ultimately the Board did not take specific action for further remediation, but left the door open for further recommendation from Mr. Runde, or staff who will continue to evaluate costs and potential options cited by the consultant. Some members expressed reservation about spending money for potential solutions that did not have data to support success.
