Last year Decorah was named the 5th safest city in Iowa by Safe Choice Security, which based its assessment on 2012 crime statistics from the FBI's census data.
Now the website www.safewise.com has reviewed the 2013 FBI crime statistics--and ranks Decorah the 8th safest city in the state. The website says Decorah had 0.12 violent crimes per 1,000 people in 2013 and 7.90 property crimes. That's actually a drop from 2012--even though Decorah was ranked 5th using that data. Decorah reported 0.74 violent crimes per 1,000 people in 2012 and 10.06 property crimes per 1,000 people in 2012.
Topping the list as the safest city in Iowa--Waukon, which had 0.26 violent crimes per 1,000 people and just 1.30 property crimes. Also making the list was New Hampton, ranked 4th. That means three of the top eight "Safest Cities" for 2015 were in Northeast Iowa, according to www.safewise.com
