Decorah HS students in Dana Einck's "World of Children" class have toured the Winneshiek Medical Center's labor and delivery unit as part of their class.
Winneshiek Medical Center Director of Inpatient Services Dawn Sanderman gave the students an inside look at the equipment and explained the steps involved in labor and delivery. The class had the opportunity to see a real placenta and umbilical cord, thanks to WMC pathologist Dr. Anna Ryan. They came away with insights about the birth process, including information about the purpose of various pieces of equipment. Student Lucinda Hansen noted, "I learned that they give the baby positive pressure instead of straight oxygen to avoid the risk of cancer."
"Being able to see first hand the equipment and the facility connected to the process we've been talking about in class advanced their understanding of course concepts in ways I am limited to in the classroom," said Einck.
WMC education and staff development coordinator Elly Lensch organized the visit.
