This is Flu Vaccination Week

Posted: Sun, Dec 6, 2015 1:46 PM

You might be tempted to think that December is too late to get a flu shot.  You'd be wrong.

This week is "National Influenza Vaccination Week,"  a week set aside to remind the public it's not too late to get a flu shot.

The flu season usually peaks between December and February--and can run as late as May.

The Center for Disease Control recommends all people 6 months and older should receive the flu vaccine.  The only exceptions are infants less than 6 months old; people who are allergic to eggs, egg products, or to any component of the vaccine; anyone with a history of Guillain-Barre syndrome; and anyone who is sick or has a fever (The vaccination should be rescheduled).

It is especially important for pregnant women to get vaccinated because of their increased risk for influenza-related complications. Pregnant women can get vaccinated during any trimester, including the first.

Flu vaccines are available at Winneshiek County Public Health, Winneshiek Medical Center, Gundersen-Decorah Clinic and local pharmacies.
